Welcome to Cefalù, an enchanting coastal town in northern Sicily, where millennia of history blend with the beauty of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Dominated by the imposing Rocca (Rock), Cefalù will welcome you with its narrow
medieval streets, the majestic Norman cathedral, and golden beaches.
What to see Cefalù
- Cefalù Cathedral (Duomo di Cefalù): A UNESCO World Heritage site, this imposing 12th-century Norman basilica is the symbol of the city. Its austere architecture and splendid apses decorated with Byzantine mosaics, including the majestic Christ Pantocrator, will leave you breathless. The interior also preserves a precious 13th-century wooden crucifix.
- The Rocca of Cefalù: A limestone promontory that dominates the city. The ascent (on foot) offers spectacular views of the coast and the historic center. At the top are the remains of the medieval Castle and the evocative ruins of the Temple of Diana, a prehistoric megalithic sanctuary dating back to the 4th-3rd century BC, of which some cyclopean walls are preserved.
- Medieval Wash House (Lavatoio Medievale): A fascinating example of medieval architecture, where water still flows today through basins carved into the rock. Its characteristic pointed arches and stone lion’s mouths tell the story of daily life in the past.
- Osterio Magno: An important medieval palace, residence of King Roger II. Although altered over the centuries, it still retains elements of its original Norman structure.
- The Megalithic Walls: Visible in some areas of the city, they bear witness to the ancient origins of Cefalù, dating back to the Greek and pre-Roman eras. These imposing defensive structures tell the story of a strategically important city since ancient times.
