Segesta, situated on an isolated height in the Val di Mazara (Mazara Valley), was one of the main cities of the Elymians, an indigenous civilization that maintained close ties with the Greek world. The site is striking for its panoramic location and its well-preserved monuments.
What to see in Segesta
- The Doric Temple: One of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world, dating back to the 5th century BC. Its majestic architecture, with its intact Doric columns, stands in a strikingly beautiful hilly landscape. Interestingly, the temple was never completely finished, as evidenced by the unfluted columns and the absence of the inner cella.
- The Greek Theatre: Carved into the top of a hill, it offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape, stretching to the Gulf of Castellammare. Built in the 3rd century BC, it is still used today for theatrical performances during the summer season, providing a unique and evocative experience.
- The Sanctuary of Contrada Mango: A sacred complex located outside the walls of the ancient city, dating back to the 6th-5th century BC. Here, you can admire the remains of a large building with an altar and a portico, evidence of cults related to fertility and chthonic deities.
- The Agora and Roman-Era Buildings: In the flat area, the remains of the ancient agora (the main square) and buildings from the Roman era, following the conquest of the city, can be identified.
What to see in Selinunte

- Temple B: A small temple of the Ionic order, of which some columns remain standing.
- Temple D: A later Doric temple, of which several columns are preserved.
